Making-It-Home

In 2016 we introduced the Making-It-Home program to provide gently-used furniture donated by Bergen County residents to individuals and families who are moving out of shelter and into permanent housing. Over a lifetime we have served 610 adults and children with assistance from 480 furniture donors, keeping 42,000 pounds of unwanted furniture out of landfills.

Making-It-Home brings furniture to formerly homeless veterans, survivors of domestic violence, seniors, and individuals with disabilities, who are moving from emergency shelter into unfurnished apartments. Clients are referred by partner agencies including Bergen County’s Housing, Health and Human Services Center (the shelter); the County’s Division of Veteran Services; Catholic Charities; the Center for Hope and Safety; and many more.

Each week we coordinate with donors to pick up their gently-used furniture and we organize teams of volunteers to transport the furniture. Making-It-Home keeps thousands of pounds of quality pieces out of our landfills.

This free service enables our clients to live in safe and comfortable environments that improve their quality of life and ability to achieve greater self-sufficiency and a brighter future. We “make their house a home.”

“When you put chronically homeless people in apartments without furniture, they aren’t going to stay. This critical piece makes a home – it makes them want to stay.”  Julia Orlando, Director, Bergen County Housing, Health and Human Services Center

“I want to thank Making-It-Home and the Prosecutor’s Office volunteers for delivering furniture to me. I never thought I'd be the one asking for help at this stage of my life...thank you again for being there, and doing what you do.  You have made a huge positive difference in my life!” Heidi, Client, Navy Veteran

“Thank you for sending a photo of my chair in its new living room. I’m so happy to see someone get back on his feet and have a home of his own. We are thrilled that our chair can be a place for him to relax!” Stacy Geant Hughes, Furniture Donor

“Making-It-Home did an amazing job in bringing furnishings to the Emerson project. The 14 veterans are so thankful, as are we, for your network of supporters and hard work and attention to detail. I will carry this memory with me always. Thanks for everything you do and being so generous of heart.” Susan Krause, Bergen County Division of Veterans Services

“I had to leave everything behind when I left. This really feels like home now.”
