In 1977 Bergen Volunteers implemented the CHORE program. Since its inception, CHORE volunteers have served more than 14,000 Bergen County seniors and individuals with disabilities in need of home repairs.  40 years after the start of CHORE, the CHEER Program was adopted by Bergen Volunteers from the Visiting Homemakers of Bergen County. Over the past 65+ years, CHEER volunteers have served 6,000 individuals, offering support, and a friendly face.

There are no fees for these programs, donations are gladly accepted.

CHEER & CHORE are funded in part by the Bergen County Division of Senior Services.

CHEER provides a helping hand to seniors and those with disabilities to enable them to live safely and independently in their homes.

Volunteers and clients forge lasting relationships by offering companionship and whenever possible, create opportunities for their CHEER clients to be engaged in their communities.

CHEER volunteers visit weekly to help home-bound seniors with tasks such as grocery shopping and light errands such as prescription pick-up, library book returns, or the post office.

Our CHORE teams make repairs and installations 5 days a week for seniors and individuals with disabilities, helping them to remain safely in their homes. The labor is free, but the clients cover the cost of materials. Sometimes clients are unable to afford the materials, including:

  • Batteries for smoke detectors

  • Locks for front doors

  • Plumbing supplies

Money raised for the Rainy Day Fund will be used to buy materials for those who cannot afford them.
