Youth Literacy Initiative

The Bergen READS program at Bergen Volunteers has transitioned to the Youth Literacy Initiative at Whittier Elementary School.

This program connects caring adult volunteers with students in kindergarten through 4th grade for weekly, one-on-one individualized sessions to support and encourage students to build reading skills, confidence, and a love of literacy.
All volunteers are carefully screened, complete a criminal background check, and receive training before participating in the program.
Each student is paired with a dedicated Reading Buddy and meets once a week from October through May.
The goal of the program is to support and encourage students at all stages of their reading journey and to empower them to grow into lifelong learners.
