The Northern New Jersey Good Business Awards 2006

Area companies were recently honored for their volunteer efforts and corporate citizenship at the seventh Annual Good Business Awards. Lee Tremble, owner of the Iron Horse Restaurant in Westwood, was honored as 2006 Business Volunteer of the Year, for his many years of giving back to the community, both professionally and personally. Guests brought more than 60 boxes of breakfast cereal which was donated to area hunger-relief organizations to alleviate summer food shortages. The collection marked the official beginning of Brown Bag Buddies, a strategic initiative sponsored by the BVC.

Good Business Awards are presented by the Northern New Jersey Business Volunteer Council (BVC), a not-for-profit coalition of businesses sponsored by the Volunteer Center of Bergen County in partnership with the Bergen County's United Way. Since 2000, its members have collectively directed more than $700,000 in resources to children and families in need.

Lee Tremble has been owner of the Iron Horse Restaurant in Westwood for the past 35 years. His outgoing personality, innovative ideas, and genuine concern for people has helped him not only to build his business into a renowned and popular eating establishment in Bergen County, but to reach out to the community and make a difference to organizations and residents.

Lee Tremble says, “I’m honored that the BVC is recognizing my work in the community. I’m grateful for the support of my lovely wife Anne, and my children Sean, Corey and Katie, because without their understanding of why ‘Daddy’s never home, he’s out saving someone’, none of this would have happened. Recognition and awards are wonderful, but they are not the reason why I do what I do. I hope to raise awareness of the need for companies, big and small, to support worthy causes. There needs to be more opportunities for agencies to connect with people in businesses, who can help financially and provide volunteer manpower to help bring about positive change to serious social problems.”

The Northern New Jersey Business Volunteer Council (BVC) recently announced the winners of its 2005 Good Business Awards. Michelle Damiani of Orange & Rockland Electric,co-chairperson of the BVC, (on left), presents the award for Outstanding Volunteer Partnership to Becton Dickinson in Franklin Lakes, for its work with the Catholic Medical Mission Board (CMMB). In May of 2005, 10 scientifically trained BD employees from around the globe volunteered to go to Zambia (where 16% of the population is HIV-positive) for two weeks to provide services at five rural healthcare facilities in collaboration with CMMB. The volunteers worked alongside CMMB staff in improving laboratory practices, light construction and general assistance at the facilities. Through this partnership with BD, the facilities received valuable and necessary products and a promise from BD for continued product donations. Additionally, CMMB developed a model for future corporate sponsorships. Accepting the award is Jennifer Farrington, Director of Social Investment at BD

Michelle Damiani, (on left), presents the award for Outstanding Volunteer Project to Jacobsen Landscape Design and Construction in Midland Park. Inspired by the vision of Children’s Aide and Family Services of Ridgewood and the Rotary club of Ridgewood, Jacobsen Landscape Design and Construction organized the transformation of an overgrown wooded lot into a beautiful outdoor retreat aptly named the Healing Garden. It is enjoyed by patrons of Family Counseling Service of Ridgewood, the children and teens in the care of Children’s Aid and Family Services and those living at the Share, Inc. senior residence. This project, which has an estimated value of $500,000, was made possible by the generous efforts of the New Jersey Landscape Contractors Association and donations from the Puffin Foundation, the Family Counseling Service Auxiliary, the Paramus Rotary and numerous individuals and volunteers. Accepting the award is Peter Kikot, Landscape Design and Sales Manager

The Northern New Jersey Business Volunteer Council (BVC) recently named the law firm of Cole, Schotz, Meisel, Forman & Leonard, P.A. of Hackensack as the recipient of its 2005 Good Business Award in the category of Outstanding Employee Volunteer Corps. As the largest law firm in Bergen County, its employees saw the need to take a leadership position in giving back to the community in which they work and live. Their Community Outreach Committee of 13 members has strategically chosen a balanced selection of volunteer activities and a variety of ways in which employees can participate, thus maximizing participation. Of the 10 volunteer activities the firm sponsored in 2005, all of them either met or well exceeded the goals set by the Committee in regards to funds raised or services provided. Accepting the award is the staff of Cole, Shotz, Meisel, Forman & Leonard, P.A
