On Wednesday, January 21, 2015, the 175 units of the Avalon Luxury Apartments in Edgewater burned to the ground.  Approximately 400 people lost their homes as a result.  The Borough of Edgewater and Bergen County are working hand in hand with local disaster and emergency agencies as well as social services, legal services, insurance companies and housing and real estate organizations to move through this devastating period of disaster.  Right now, the residents are trying to piece together basic insurance, housing and plans for day to day living.

The Borough of Edgewater has set up a website where people can donate money to be used for obtaining needed items for the displaced residents. Additionally, donations of clothing, food, drink, and toiletries can be brought to City Place, in the former Sleepy’s Mattress Store, 225 River Road in Edgewater. Gift cards for restaurants, pet supplies, and clothing will be most appreciated. People are asked to call 201-943-1700 (Hit “O” when prompted) to get updates on what items may be needed.

The Volunteer Center of Bergen County, which manages the Bergen County VOAD (Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster) is compiling a list of potential volunteers, to be used if and when their services will be needed to help the victims. Please click here to complete a simple volunteer form that will help us to get the  right people in at the right time.

Thank you.  If you have any questions, you can contact Debbie Emery, Director, at
