Make it fun! |
Identify a need and make sure that there is an agency that will be able to use what you collect. |
| |
Speak with the agency before you begin your collection to find out specifically what they need, and to make drop-off or pickup arrangements for the items collected. |
| |
Set a goal (bags, boxes, pounds) and schedule the collection to take place on a specific date(s). Generally, it is better to conduct a collection over a short timespan so that people in your group will feel some urgency to get the job done. |

Make a splash! Hold a kickoff, use props to publicize the drive and use every way possible to tell people about what you're doing. For instance, wheel in a grocery cart filled with groceries to call attention to the fact that you're having a food drive. Place an article in your newsletter, put posters on bulletin boards, hand out flyers, put stuffers in paychecks or mailboxes and TALK, TALK, TALK about the collection. |
| |
Designate a collection site which is easily accessible to everyone. The spot should be secure so that the items collected reach their intended audience. |
| |
Continually update people on the progress of the collection effort, and state how much farther you have to go to reach your goal. Use a "thermometer" chart! |
| |
Get as many people as possible involved in getting the items to the agency. |
- If the agency picks up what your group has collected, arrange a welcoming party when they arrive.
- If you'll be delivering what you've collected to the agency, take as many people as possible along for
the ride. Don't forget the camera - this is a perfect photo op!
After it's all over, make sure to thank everyone who participated and let them know how successful the drive was. Include how much was collected, any photos and thank you letters or feedback from the agency. |
| |
Evaluate your efforts, talk about what worked and what needs improvement, then start planning for your next collection! |
